How much will it cost to see my friend or family member released until the court date?
The short answer is… from zero dollars to 15% of the court appointed bail amount. Not much help? Here’s what it depends on…
Listen closely to how the magistrate or judge describes the conditions for pretrial release. Does he/she use the words “secured” or “unsecured?”
- The most favorable condition of release is an “unsecured” or PR bond. It’s simple and free. The defendant simply promises to appear for trial. See the definition of personal recognizance .
- If it is a “secured” bond, someone either has to pay the whole amount of the bail, or put up a bond pledging property worth as much or more than the bond amount. That is where a bail bondsman can help. That’s what we do. We make it as simple, painless, and quick as possible. We do charge a nonrefundable fee, usually as little 10% of the amount of the bond, the minimum required by Virginia law. See our post on bail bond costs.
Of course everyone needs to know…
Where do we meet to set up the bond?
The easiest way to get the bail bond posted is to meet your bondsman at the jail where your friend or family member is incarcerated. The reason that works the best is because the defendant usually will need a ride home. Also, we need to post the bond, in person, with the Magistrate that is located at that particular jail. The actual location at each jail varies depending on the jail. So call us first so we can set the time and location exactly. Be assured, however, we make it a priority to always be on time. We won’t keep you waiting!
Occasionally, it makes sense for us to meet the cosigner somewhere else other than at the jail. For example, if you are out-of-state, we can handle the bail bond application process over the phone. Sometimes there are other reasons why it might make sense to meet with your bondsman in a different location. If so, simply call us and we can make the appropriate arrangements.
